Ark
1 Attempt
Approach God’s presence
Correctly and with respect
And David was afraid of the
Lord that day, and he said,
“How can the ark of the Lord
come to me?”
So David was not willing to take
the ark of the Lord into the
city of David
But David took it aside to the
house of Obed-edom the Gittite
And the ark of the Lord
remained in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months,
and the Lord blessed Obededom and all his household
And it was told King David, “The
Lord has blessed the household
of Obed-edom and all that
belongs to him, because
of the ark of God”
The OT Presence of God is never
Just the Presence of God
It’s either blessing
Or judgment
So David went and brought up
the ark of God from the house
of Obed-edom to the city of
David with rejoicing
So all Israel brought up the ark…
of the LORD with shouting, to
the sound of the horn, trumpets,
and cymbals, and made loud
music on harps and lyres
- 1 Chron. 15
And when those who bore the
ark of the Lord had gone six
steps, he sacrificed an ox and a
fattened animal
(Poles- 1 Chron. 13-15)
And David danced before the
Lord with all his might. And
David was wearing
a linen ephod
He’s a King
Dancing hard
Wearing commoners clothes
Because…God
So David and all the house of
Israel brought up the ark of the
Lord with shouting and with the
sound of the horn
As the ark of the Lord came into
the city of David, Michal the
daughter of Saul looked out of
the window…
That’s my man
He loves our God
He’s leading the people
To celebrate our God
…and saw King David leaping
and dancing before the Lord
…and saw King David leaping
and dancing before the Lord,
and she despised him
in her heart
Unspoken Expectations
Is a root of
Relationship problems
Often don’t become spoken
Until transgressed
What's my expectation?
Do they know it?
Is it biblical?
Can I give grace and serve them
No matter what?
Your answer
Reflects your understanding
Of Kingdom citizenship
How does Jesus treat you?
And they brought in the ark of
the Lord and set it in its place,
inside the tent that David
had pitched for it
And David offered burnt
offerings and peace offerings
before the Lord
And when David had finished
offering the burnt offerings and
the peace offerings, he blessed
the people in the name
of the Lord of hosts
…and distributed among all the
people, the whole multitude of
Israel, both men and women,
a cake of bread, a portion
of meat, and a cake of
raisins to each one
Then all the people departed,
each to his house
And David returned to bless
his household
But Michal the daughter of Saul
came out to meet David
and said…
“How the king of Israel honored
himself today…
…uncovering himself today
before the eyes of his servants'
female servants, as one of the
vulgar fellows shamelessly
uncovers himself!”
How did she know?
“Give us a King
Like the other nations have”
They were never supposed
To be like the other nations
They were supposed to be
Like the people of God
Saul= Like other nation' Kings
Saul= Like other nation' Kings
Abject failure

David= Pretty boy, shepherd

Not like other Nation's Kings
But like God wants
How did she know?
She adopted the expectations
Of the nations around Israel
And judged David by them
Whose opinion I care most for
Sets the course for my life
How I act, react
What I'll believe and
How I'll experience life
How do you know
What a Christian should be?
Religious and Societal
We know the religious
“…snuck in to spy out our
freedom and make us slaves”
Religious and Societal
Christians shouldn’t judge
Jesus never judged
Religious and Societal
Christians shouldn’t judge
Jesus never judged
Giving grace & judging teachers

Ambassadors for Christ- 2 Cor. 5
Religious and Societal
Be known by what you’re for
Jesus was
(Pressure to censor truth)
Why are we taking our cues
From all the nations around us?
When they don’t even know
What Jesus was like
From the Bible?
If you hold to my teaching, you
really are my disciples. Then
you will know the truth and the
truth will…?
- Jesus, John 8
If you hold to my teaching, you
really are my disciples. Then
you will know the truth and the
truth will set you free
- Jesus, John 8
The religious people
Told them who to be
The Romans pressured them
Jesus came to set themAnd you- free
Whose opinion I care most for

What I'll believe and
How I'll experience life
David is a King
David danced before the Lord.
In a linen ephod.
With all his might.
Sin? No
Against culture? Yes
And…set others free
To celebrate as well
Where the Spirit of the Lord is,
there is freedom
- Two Corinthians 3:17
And David said to Michal…
“It was before the Lord, who
chose me above your father and
above all his house, to appoint
me as prince over Israel…
Whose opinion matters most?
Why would I follow the pattern
Of a man God rejected?
Why would we act like people
Who don’t know our Jesus?
Why would we take Christianity
Lessons from our culture?
Remember your leaders...
Consider the outcome of their
way of life, and imitate
their faith
- Hebrews 13:7
…to appoint me as prince over
Israel- the people of the Lordand I will celebrate
before the Lord
No apologies
I'm doing what God
Called me to do
I will make myself yet more
contemptible than this, and I
will be abased in your eyes
I will become even more
Undignified than this
I will make myself yet more
contemptible than this, and I
will be abased in your eyes
I’ve chosen whose opinion
Matters most
So my course is set
But by the female servants of
whom you have spoken, by them
I shall be held in honor”
And Michal the daughter
of Saul had no child to
the day of her death
- 2 Samuel 6:9-23
Whose opinion matters most?
Consider the outcome of their
way of life…
Know the Jesus
You and I follow
Refuse to argue
But refuse to conform as well
When we become just like them
We lose the very thing
We have to offer them
Grace and Truth
Jesus isn’t like our culture
His Kingdom is different
More than anything else
