We describe the central issues in use of experimental crosses in model
organisms (such as the mouse) to map the genetic loci that contribute to variation in
complex phenotypes. We view the problem as largely one of model selection. We
will give an overview of the problem, sketch the model selection aspects, and outline
the key areas for future research.
